Garrett Ace Apex Software Update 1.28

Garrett released software update 1.28 for the Ace Apex on March 16, 2021. According to Garrett, software update 1.28 adds the following stability improvements / enhancements to the Ace Apex

  • Improved overall stability
  • Faster and more accurate ground balance in saltwater
  • More accurate pinpointing
  • More distinctive tones to better differentiate good targets from iron
  • Backlight powers on temporarily while making Menu changes

I updated my Garrett Ace Apex to version 1.28 the other day and thought that I would take the time to document the update process for you.

  1. Click here to access Garrett’s Ace Apex software update page. Scroll down on the page, and click on the download the ACEApex_Update28.zip link. Click the “Download” button in the right corner.

2. Find the .zip file you saved to your computer, right-click to select “Extract All” files from the .zip file, and then follow the instructions.

3. Double-click FlashTool_1_04_28_0.exe

4. Note, you might not be able to run the software update because it will be blocked by Windows Defender SmartScreen.

The work around is to right click FlashTool_1_04_28_0.exe, left click Properties, and then place a checkbox next to Unblock. Click Apply, and repeat these steps for apex28.exe

 5. Power on your Apex and verify that the battery has at least 2 bars worth of charge. Leave the Apex powered on and plug the USB cable into your computer. On the back of your Apex, insert the micro-USB connection cable that is normally used to recharge your Apex.

6. Click the “Update ACE Apex” button.

This update process will take a couple of minutes to complete.

Watch for on-screen prompts that indicate when the update is complete.

I look forward to seeing how this update affects the overall stability and performance of the Ace Apex. Check back for an in depth review of software update version 1.28 for the Garrett Ace Apex!

    1. Aren’t computers fun? Fortunately, I was able to reproduce this problem, here’s how you fix it; Double click the ACEApex_Update28.zip file that you just downloaded. Drag and drop (copy) both files to the Windows desktop. Run Flashtool from the Windows desktop and everything should work as expected.
