Garrett Metal Detectors Acquires White’s Electronics

It’s official; Garrett has purchased White’s Electronics! The acquisition of White’s Electronics was announced by Garrett in an October 16, 2020 press release.

The press release, which you can reference here specifies that Garrett has acquired White’s trademarks, intellectual property, tooling, and other assets. White’s real-estate in Oregon and Scotland are not included in the acquisition. White’s Electronics has also acknowledged the acquisition by Garrett on their website.

This is an interesting turn of events to say the least. Both Garrett and White’s are well established American metal detector design and manufacturing companies. It is safe to say however, that both of these companies have had difficulties at keeping pace with companies such as Minelab. There has been a lot of innovation in the hobby metal detecting market over the past decade much of which has left product offerings from Garrett and White’s seeming a little long in the tooth. The exception to this is the White’s Spectra V3i which is just as customizable as the Minelab Equinox or the XP Deus, and just as capable, according to the many, many fans of this particular metal detector.

Customer service has always been a top priority of both companies, so it’s really nice to see two companies whose values are so closely aligned come together as one. We can only speculate as to what White’s was working on before they halted operations. Hopefully Garrett can build upon the success of White’s products such as the Spectra V3i, and bring a truly innovative new metal detector to market using White’s and Garretts now combined resources.
