Do You Need a Pinpointer For Metal Detecting?

  • by

If you’re brand new to the hobby of metal detecting you’re probably wondering; “Do I need a pinpointer for metal detecting?” Technically speaking; no you do not. Practically speaking; I would NEVER go metal detecting without a pinpointer!

What is a pinpointer in metal detecting?

A pinpointer is essentially a simplified handheld metal detector. Pinpointers are extremely precise, and are used to “focus in” on targets once you’ve already dug your hole. Handheld pinpointers are non-motion, meaning that they don’t need to be moving (swung) in order to detect a metal object. Pinpointers cannot differentiate between ferrous and non-ferrous metal objects and do not offer features that are found on traditional metal detectors such as notch discrimination.

Why do I need a pinpointer?

While you don’t necessarily need a pinpointer in order to metal detect; once you use one you’ll never go back to not using one. Pinpointers greatly reduce the amount of time that you’ll spend digging and recovering targets. If you’ve gone metal detecting without a pinpointer then you are all too familiar with the frustration involved with constantly switching between standing and bending in order to recover a target. When I had started metal detecting I didn’t own a pinpointer at first. Upon purchasing one and using it for the first few times, I found myself to be less frustrated and more inclined to dig those questionable signals because I knew that I could dig quickly and efficiently.
